About Julie
Hi, I'm Julie Adams. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Texas, a Gottman Level 2 certified couples therapist, and the founder of Adams Hill Counseling. I am licensed in Texas and can see clients virtually throughout the state.
My own path here has taken a few unexpected turns, which is probably part of why I enjoy working with people who are figuring out what they want their lives to look like. Before becoming a therapist, I worked at a residential treatment center in my home state of Alaska, then spent several years teaching English in rural China and Japan. Teaching abroad was one of my favorite chapters of my life and eventually led me into refugee work. I worked with newly arrived refugees in Austin and later worked with refugees and asylum seekers in Japan through the United Nations. I didn't always share a language with the people I worked with, but we found ways to communicate and build trust. Those experiences taught me a lot about communication and the importance of staying curious when you don't immediately understand another person.
After becoming a therapist, I spent several years working with students and families in an Austin middle school. That experience shaped a lot of how I think about therapy and the ways our relationships, families, communities, and circumstances affect how we move through the world. These days, I work with adults and couples, and I'm especially drawn to people who are navigating relationships, family building, identity, and other big life questions. I particularly enjoy working with LGBTQ+ clients and with people whose lives don't necessarily follow the traditional script.
I'm a Gottman Level 2 certified couples therapist and am currently deepening my practice through training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I'm a nerd for good tools, so I like bringing practical things into therapy that you can actually use outside of our sessions. At the same time, I don't think therapy is about finding a perfect version of yourself or checking off a list of things you're supposed to fix. I want to help you understand what's happening, get clearer about what matters to you, and make choices that feel more intentional.
My style is warm, direct, and a little bit humorous. I'll laugh with you, I'll gently push you when I think it might help, and I'll be honest with you when I think you're getting in your own way. I want therapy to be a place where you can show up as you are without having to have everything figured out first.
Adams Hill Counseling is named after my grandparents' homestead, where they created a place for our family to gather and spend time together. My grandmother always had an extra seat at the table and an ear for anyone who needed one. That is still a pretty good description of the kind of space I want to create for my clients.
I live in Texas with my wife and kids and see clients virtually throughout the state. In the summer, you'll probably find me in Alaska with my wife and kids where we backpack, camp, and play under the midnight sun with my extended family.
If you're thinking about making some changes and aren't quite sure what that looks like yet, I'd love to hear what's bringing you here.
My Fees
I'm in-network with United and most Aetna and Cigna plans. Sessions run 50 minutes. If you're paying out of pocket, it's $125 for individuals and $165 for couples.
